Council approves naming of Town parks

member of 2021 to 2025 Okotoks Town Council standing in Council Chambers

Okotoks Town Council approved the renaming/naming of the following parks as recommended by the Governance and Priorities Committee at yesterday’s regular Council meeting.

  • Riverside Community Park (1400 North Railway Street) be renamed “Bill Robertson Park”
  • Dewdney Park (53 North Railway Street) be renamed “Piisttoo Park”
  • The park located at the Riverfront Lands (370068 40 Street East) be named “Iitopatopa Park
  • The park located at 245 Mountainview Drive be named “Allen (Al) King Park”

The naming of the parks was part of the consultation process with Indigenous partners for the recently completed Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Assessments. The Town’s overall naming process has been adjusted to move away from using only Colonial naming standards.

Named family and Indigenous partners have been notified and formal letters of acknowledgement will be sent to them.

The Town is working on plans for naming celebrations/grand openings for these parks and will share more information as soon as the details are finalized.
